Capital Punishment Should Be Abolished - 1955 Words

As society has advanced and time has progressed, it has become apparent that capital punishment should be abolished worldwide. Around the world, various countries continue to practice this brash, inhumane punishment. The legal system is intended to regulate citizen’s behaviour which aims to provide a smooth functioning society. When someone is sentenced to death, the legal system loses the â€Å"fair† aspect of the proceedings, as under no circumstances is the death penalty â€Å"fair†. Capital punishment should be abolished because it violates Section 12 and Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, it goes against the teachings of the church, and it creates the possibility for someone to be wrongfully executed. On June 26th, 1976, the Canadian Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, abolished capital punishment across the nation (12). From 1749 to 1976, over 1,481 people had been sentenced to death, and out of that number, a staggering 710 were executed (2). From 1960 to 1982, the Canadian Bill of Rights contained minimal law that protected individuals of their right to life, and it wasn’t until April 17th, 1982 that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was placed into law, under the leadership of Prime Minister Trudeau (13). The charter today is recognized internationally as a â€Å"model document protecting rights and freedoms of its citizens†(3).
